Review of Previous Student Video

In this blog I will be reviewing Jem, Zakariya, Courtney and Fuzails music video in relation to Andrew Goodwin, Carol Vernallis and Laura Mulvey's theories.

Genre
The genre of the song is Indie / Rock. This genre can also be noticed because of the guitars (instruments) seen in the video,

Audience
I think based on watch the music video and the genre of the song the intended audience are for young males and females who probably play instruments similar to the instruments heard in the song and that like to hang out with small groups of friends.

Representation
I think that the representation of the music video is that young people from any gender just love their music.

Goodwin’s Theory (Narrative / Structure)
The narrative / structure of the music video are illustration and disjuncture. This is because at times in the music video the lyrics are acted out (video telling the story of the lyrics) and most of the times you see the two performers playing their guitars which have nothing to do with the lyrics.

Media Language / Form
In the video there are good match cutting. The cuts were done to the tempo and the beats of the song. There were also transitions and the lip-syncing was done well.

Strengths
Strengths of the video is that the jump cuts worked will with the positioning of the performers and video had base-tracks. Also I think that the video worked will with the genre of the song.

4 Visible Basetracks
Vernallis’s Theory
There is no continuity editing. The edits are obvious in the music videos such as the wipes seen towards the end of the video and there are jump cuts. In the video there are 4 visible base tracks and the camera is moving (most of the time).

Obvious Edits - Wipes

Weaknesses
The wipes seen in the music video towards the end of the video are not in time with the beat. Also the camera is used on a tripod a lot of the time so the filming is static. Personally I think that one of the performers were not suited for the roll of performing because he looked uncomfortable and a performer shouldn't be like that unless they are supposed to act like that.

Mulvey’s Theory
I think that Mulvey’s theory doesn't really apply to this music video because there is no sexual imbalance between the female and males seen in the video. But I do agree that the males are shot showing more of their body

Also in lesson we looked at more of previous students work and did a quick review on it
