Laura Mulvey looked into the representation of
people in music videos, and in particular how woman are portrayed. In many
music videos we see women are represented in a sexual way which is used to
please males. She suggests that men have an active role by looking and women
a passive role where they dress accordingly to please the men. This is shown
repeatedly through many music videos as the term 'sex sells' is very true
because if males are going to be the audience, they are likely to be more
attracted to and watch a video with half naked women prancing around in
it.
Above is a slideshow of some screen shots I have taken from a music video called 'Oh Love' by the American rock band Greenday. Laura Mulvey has the idea of something called dismembering, this is where close up images of particular parts of the body are shown on screen in order to please the male eye. As we can see in this music video, there is a multitude of shots of close ups of parts of the female body like legs, breasts and bums. Mulvey talks about the 'male gaze' and how women are dressed accordingly to please the male fantasy. In this video this is expressed as the women are dressed provocatively and lay around looking sexy purely for the mens visual pleasure. The woman do not have an important role, they are just laying around almost like they are insignificant objects and have just become part of the furniture to make the place look pretty.
