Research - Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin Argues that pop videos rely on repetition, the chorus of the song. the repetition means we become familiar with the genre and will start to have some expectation.

Wretch 32's song for example has a chorus that gets repeated a few times within the song which helps us feel familiar with the song and know what to expect.

Goodwin argues that there are three types of relations between somgs and videos.

1. First is Illustration which is where the lyrics and the video are linked.

The video above is a good example of illustarion because it tells the story of the lyrics.

2. Amplification: This occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

For example the Noah and The Whale song is a good example of amplification because of the actions they make when saying things such as "love love love" and "sun sun sun".

3. Disjuncture : This is where the is little connection between the lyric and video; the video contradicts the lyrics.

The Michael Jackson video has nothing to do with the lyrics and they contradict eachother which is why its a good example of disjunture.
