Here is Katy Perry's Teenage Dream Digipak. Katy falls into the genre of pop which is of the same genre as Athena as they are both popular icons in the charts today. This Digipak is a perfect example of following the codes and conventions in order to produce a good ancillary window.
House Style:
The colour pink runs throughout appearing in some way on every page connecting them all together. A clear font is used in order to make it clear and easy for the consumer to read. The Track List at the back is in red which stands out against the light pink background to make it eye catching. The further information at the bottom of the back page is in blue; this is a contrasting colour to pink, therefore it clashes but the blue is brighter and easier to read.Themes:
The Digipak gives a fantasy feel, this is because it is like we are entering Katy's dream with all the candy floss clouds, and this is also reflected in the title Teenage Dream. Everything is pink, girly and sweet. The two discs are even styled to look like sweets, the bright realistic colours make it look good enough to eat. Katy is styled with lots of make up and perfect hair to make her look irresistible. She has been air brushed so she looks 'perfect' but almost artificial, just like the sweets are.Audience:
The girliness and bright colours leads me to believe that she is targeting young girls as these colours would draw them in. On the contrary, she can also be seen to be targeting males as her main core audience, this is because she is naked on the clouds, just like their fantasy or guilty pleasure.I feel the ideologies of this Digipak are shallow, however common in everyday society; this is because it all revolves around sex. Katy is being represented as a sex object and a pin-up girl for men to look at whenever they like. Behind all the sweet and cute innocence of it all, there are underlying meanings that revert back to the males pleasure. However, it is tarnished with her glossy perfect smile, which is guaranteed to attract males and make sales sales.
The close ups follow the conventions as we can see the artists face clearly. There are other images of the artist featured through out too. We see a shot of her in the booklet, where Katy is wearing a pretty dress and a fancy tiara, this could be her dream to look like a princess and get treated like one too. Every single page has been thought about carefully and the House Styles created the uniform look.
How can I relate this to my own work?
Katy Perry has a very clear colour scheme through her Digipak, which is an essential convention that needs to be used. Therefore this has shown me that I need to chose a clear colour scheme to stick to through out my own Digipak, to create a following feel through all the panels. I am yet to choose the colours I would like to use, however I will stick to the three colour rule and have something classy and sophisticated to match the feel of the music video.
