EDITING - Lesson 4

Today we focused on cutting to the beat. Susan has a very good ear for the beats, so using her skills, we were able to be very precise with where the beats fall. As you can see from the pictures below, we put markers on the 4th beats which then enable us the have precise cuts on every beat of the music. It took a long time to do this for every base track, but it's very useful for us!

We've finished!

EDITING - Final day

As a group we have decided to all come in at lunch time on Thursday 29/11/12 (the day before the deadline) to work on the final product which is the music video.

We have also decided that we will work on the video in turns when we don’t have a lesson or if we were not busy in college. So Amber worked on the video 9:00ish to 12:15, We all worked on it together at 12:15 to 1:15, Then Sibora and Amber left so Me and Raheleh worked on the video 1:15 to 3:00. After Amber and I worked on the Video from 3:00 to 4:30 and then Amber had to leave and I worked on the video to around 6:00.

Here are screen shots of the editing we did

We decided to do this so that when we came in for lesson tomorrow (9:00 to 12:15) there wouldn't be too much to do and so that we will be able to finish the music video before the deadline that day.

AMBER - Candle Motif

Here are photos taken while I was filming the candle part of our music video. I had to be really careful when doing this because I had this expensive camera around this hot flames, however I remained steady handed and didn't get too close to them so it was ok. I tried out making different patterns with the candles and here we can see a heart shaped one. I hope my group like the candle idea that I have had because I'd really like to use this in our music video.

What do they represent?
The candles are bright and they shine just like Athena's personaily shines through in the video. The flame represents her never ending hope and passion that burns through her soul because she is so determind to do well in her life. I thought about having the candle being blown out at the end of the song but I decided not to do this because the candles burn on, just like her flame of hope never dies out.

AMBER - FILMING - Day 5

It has been very complicated to try to upload this vlog!
Basically what happened was, I filmed the vlog on the Flipcam, however when I tried to put the footage onto my Mac, I found out that the Filpcam had crashed. Trevor the technician, told me this when I asked him what happened. This meant that the file only now appears as an Audio rather than the actual footage of me talking, which is unfortunate :( But also when I tried to upload the Audio file onto my blog, it wouldn't work. Therefore I decided to use the program Camtasia which enabled me to record the Audio and upload onto my blog easier, which I have done here:

Wonder - HTC | Hear The Detail Advert

While using YouTube to watch videos and stream / listen to music and their videos, I have come across this advert video.

When I first saw the video I really liked it because it gives across the feeling and vibe which I want to create in the music video which we out making for the song.
The reason I have asked my sister to tell me what she thought about the advert is because she is a female which is part of the wider audience.

Feedback Responses

Athena's (Artist) Image & Branding

After watching the footage that has have filmed and the rough cut’s that has been made, I noticed that the recurring thing in all the videos is that the performer ‘Athena’ always has her hair in different styles but always with her fringe out.

So this is something that she can be recognised by, as many artists have their own thing they are recognised by see previous blog click here

I also think that part of Athena’s image and brand is her style of clothing.
Here style of clothing is stylish but yet casual and smart (but nothing which goes over the top), with her hair and make up. This also allows other girls and her audience to relate to her, as the things she wears and her style came be copied by other, but still be noticed as her style.

clothing that was chosen / planned last minute, due to the change in the performer, that the performer is to wear music video Wonder. Each outfit will be based on the basetrack and location that as a group we have planned.
Also she is an artist who respects her fans, audiences and music in general so she has a positive public image, which allows little girls to look up to her and having parents like her as their children can listen to her music as it also sends a positive message and meaning across.

New Rough Cut – Feedback

I have showed Rebecca the new rough cut I have done.
Here is a quick summary of her feedback on GoAnimate (as because I forgot to film it).

Animated Presentations - Powered by GoAnimate.

New Rough Cut (based on previous feedback)

As I have stayed after lesson to work on the introduction of the music video, I have decided to re do the rough cut by myself , starting from scratch based on the original / previous rough cut (still keeping the previous rough cut).

I will show this rough cut that I have done to the other group members and we will discuss what we should do after with the previous / original rough cut and the new filming footage they our going to film outside on Sunday.

Re-edited Intro Feedback

I have showed and filmed the target audience’s who have previously viewed and commented on the previous rough cut, the new intro I have done.
Here our their feedback

Re-edited Intro

After getting feedback from the rough cut by our target audience and our wider audience, I have made some changes on the sequence based on the feedback, which I think is appropriate. I have done an analysis on the intro of the sequence from the rough cut based on the feedback and why I have done the changes.

Here is the re edited version of the intro

Here is my analysis of the introductions of both versions

here are screenshots of when I was editing on FinalCut

Changes To What We Have Filmed Using FinalCut

For some clips / footage that we have filmed, I have changed the speeds on the basetracks and done some reverses, as a group we think that it is better if it is slower / faster or reverse, and we were given feedback from Rebecca to do so after she watched what we have filmed.

Finished Lip-Syncing & Cutting

I have stayed behind after my lesson’s to work in Media (22/11/12), so that I can finish lip-syncing and cutting the footage to the original song.
This will allow me and the group to edit the footage during the first half of Friday's lesson for the rough cut, so it can be in on time for the deadline on Friday.

Rough Cut Feedback

Here is our rough cut feedback
We will apply and make the changes to the music video we our making based on all our feedback so far

EDITING - Lesson 3

In today's lesson we worked on lip synching. Here are some pictures of when we synched the piano parts which were quite hard because we needed to match the song in time with when my fingers pressed down the keys. Luckily when the piano was played, Amber played in time with the song to match the beat and rhythm which made this process much easier because it was already in time.

Louisa's Feedback

In today's lesson, Louisa gave us some feedback of what she thinks of our footage so far and what she thinks we can do with it

As this is feedback we will try to add and act upon the feedback given if it is needed, because it it is from the wider audience, who is still the audience

conformation on the piano place and pub

Sorry its late but I hadn't put the conformation on the piano and pub place so i have done it today.
As i (Sibora) was in charge of filming and booking locations, i have contacted the locations - The Finsbury (Pub) & Peregrine's Pianos through email asking / telling them what days that as a group we want to film for the music video.
Here are screenshots of the replys to the emails that i sent them.

Rough Cut

Here is our rough cut which we presented in lesson to day. We are aware that is not the whole song but, we will show / present the class clips and snip its of our base tracks and what we filmed so they can kind of get an idea of what is going on and what we want to achieve  This will mean we can get feedback because in the class there are females who are between the age of 16 and 35 and that is our target audience.

Lip Syncing Basetracks

I have stayed being after lesson today so that I could do more lip syncing after lesson, as the rough cut deadline is this Friday and the rough cut isn't near being done yet, but it’s getting there.

EDITING - Using Markers

We have used markers a lot during our editing to know where things are and go, so the markers our very important. We have come up with a marker color scheme to make our editing easier.

Red Marker – Every 4 Beats This will making cutting to the beat easier
Green Marker – Lip Syncing This will make lip syncing what we filmed with the original song easier
Light Blue Marker – Piano This will make syncing the hand movement ion the piano to the sound of the piano easier

Main Structure of Basetracks & Editing

Keeping in mind of continuity in our editing, acting upon Rebecca’s feedback. We have decided to layer our basetracks from morning (bright) light – starting the music video to night light (dark) – ending the music video. So this will let the music video have a full day effect.

Feedback from Target Audiences

Here are videos which Raheleh and Sibora has filmed using a flip camera, asking questions to our target audience about the music video we our creating.

Video 1- Christina – Female, 17

Video 2 - Anjana – Female, 18

We our happy with our feedback so far and will work (rearrange / edit) on the parts of the video which the target audience have commented on about what we should / need to work on.

AMBER - Online promotional methods for Rascals

AMBER - Rascals - Fire Blaze

Rascals - Fire Blaze has now been released! The single was posted on Youtube on two days ago on November 18th so it took 16 days for the post-production process to happen as all footage for this video was filmed in one day on 2nd November. This has shown me that the deadline that we are working to for our music video project is a realistic time limit as around two weeks is the same that this production had.

Quick Summary:

The whole video is in Black and White and this idea was planned in the pre-production process. The footage on the play back screen came out in Black and White, at the time on set when I saw the footage come out Black and White I did wonder why; but now I understand that it was because they planned this idea way before the filming process so it's not something you can spontaneously decide to do, it has to be pre-planned.

In terms of Vernallis' theory, this music video cuts to the beat. The song has clear rhythmical changes and a strong rapid beat which the editors used to their advantage to make some very interesting shots with.
As for Mulvey's theory, this video follows the conventions as we see two females apparel in this video as extras. They are dressed in short clothing with basically barely anything on in order to show their bodies off to the boys. They are seen from the males point of view and they are only there to amplify the boys image.

This was a 12 hour shoot where they got lots of filming done and they worked super hard with barely any breaks of messing around, they knew exactly what they were doing. Although only one location is used in this video, there was many different base tracks filmed from different angles. I would say about 12 base tracks were filmed which enabled them to cut nicely on the beat to look at the same artists but from different perspectives which makes the video more aesthetically pleasing.

It was interesting to watch the final product as when I watch now, it I see it in a new light because I was actually there on set as it was filmed so I know understand and know what they did to achieve it. It is very gratifying knowing that I was involved in the making of this video and it was a great experience.

And meeting the boys was great too!

AMBER - Work experience - Day 2

As the producer was pleased with how I worked on Friday, they called me back for the second shoot on the Monday. This day was slightly different to Friday as instead of running around for everyone, I spent most of the day working along side the Art Director, Amy.
This experience has helped me realise that Art Directing is a route I might like to go down, as I do Fine Art this enables me to visual what I would like the set to look like and where the performers should stand ect... Working along Amy was a valuable experience and I loved every minute of it so after the day had ended I emailed her saying thank you.

Pictures from on set:

AMBER - Work experience - Day 1

Chris told me that how he got to where he is today was through doing many work experience placements and often working hard for long hours for free. He said it is important to ask lots of people.
Therefore I asked Rebecca if she knows any opportunities of work experience placements for students and she told me about a company called Luti Media who are a music video production company who are looking for runners.
I emailed the producer and she agreed to let me help out on the Rascals music video for 'Fire Blaze' shoot on Friday.
Formally known as Little Rascals when they formed; Shizz, Tempz, Merkz and Kay Willz are know known as Rascals. They are an urban boy band who have now made a come back 5 years later because they are now older and more mature (expect Shizz because he was very hyper!)

AMBER - EDITING - Laying down the Base Tracks

Today I took the opportunity to come into college to edit. I have no lessons on a Tuesday so I thought that this would be the perfect time to go into a media room and have some time alone to really concentrate and edit. In this time I go a lot done, I laid down 8 of our Base Tracks and lip synched them all to the song. I learnt a lot from doing this and now next lesson we will start cutting up the footage as a group.

Here we see all the 10 Base Tracks I laid down. The red marker at the beginning shows where the song starts on each track.

Lip synching the footage.

Editing – Feedback Response

As Rebecca motioned during giving us feedback on our footage we should edit keeping continuity in mind as there is footage filmed outside during different parts of the day. So I have categorized the footage we have filmed into groups of lighting and the time of day.

I have decided to look at different music videos where they have done this, to have a better idea and understanding of how the continuity editing can be done in our music video make.

In this One Direction music video it starts off in the morning - day light and then towards the end of the song footage / basetracks are seen where filming has been done at night - darker. This seems as if a whole day has gone by in the time of the song.

Rascals Promoting New Music Video 'Fire Blaze’ & Band

After releasing the new music video and song they are mainly using social networking sites, YouTube and their website to promote the video.

They have uploaded their video on their website and on there YouTube Vevo account, so people can access, watch / stream or download the video all over the world.

www.rascalsofficial.com
They have also uploaded links of the music video on YouTube on their Facebook and Twitter Account.

www.facebook.com/RascalsMusic
@RascalsOfficial
Furthermore they have been ‘retweeting’ tweets from fans and people on Twitter praising and linking the new video in their tweets. Allowing anyone on Twitter to see and getting the names trending. Meaning more people can see or hear / read about the video, maybe getting them more fans.

As the main purpose the music video that Group 22 is creating is to promote a new artist ‘Athena’ and her music, so there are a lot of close ups of the artists face. Another good idea would do the same thing which Rascals have done by using different social networking site to promote Athena’s music, getting her new fans, keeping her in contact with her fans and promoting her music.

New Music Video – ‘Fire Blaze’

On Monday 19/11/12 – 12:00am the Rascals ‘Fire Blaze’ music video was released.
While watching the music video I noticed a lot of the main things they spent a lot of time filming have not been used, but it is only a 4:08 sec music video.

In the video there are a lot of basetracks filmed at 1 location. The cuts are in time with the beat following Vernallis’s theory. It took less then 3 weeks for the all the editing to be done, which is around about the same amount of time that we have to edit our music video.

I have done quick review on the music video based on the 3 theories I learnt at the beginning of the course

here is a quick behind the scenes video on set of filming

Reflection – Finished Filming / Editing

Extra Filming From Amber

As I was unaware and not told about anyone of the group was planning on Tuesday 13/11/12, I was not able to take part in the filming outside, which was done by Amber with the help from another group. As for the rest of the group we have been told that even though we were not there we are still aloud to use what they filmed for the music video make.

However even thought I personally wouldn’t what to have external filming in the music video, it is a group music video and we have to agree to certain things. So what Amber and the other group filmed we will be using in the music video. Also I think the filming they did was good and they are a lot of basetracks that can be used.

Here are links to Amber’s blogs to do with the filming on that day:

Filming Day 3 Review

Projection 2

How the projection filming will be done (plan)

As other groups are doing this and it was done in last year Howl (Nick & Poppy’s) video, I am hoping that during editing we can make it different to other groups, so the outcome is not the same and there is a interesting difference.

Projection Research

We have looked at the ‘making of’ & ‘being the scenes of’ videos which have give us the inspiration of the projection idea to see how the projections are done in the video
Here are some videos below:
 2:14 – 2:34

1:04 – 1:09

After looking and searching the internet on search engines, we were shown 2 different ideas of projections (one is below) and the other on the music display on itunes, as a group we will pick which one to use

We decided to go with the mac music display to use for the projection, as the movement above dose not move to the beat of the song wonder.
I like the mac projection because it is colorful and has a lot of movement which can be linked to the meaning of 'wonder' as well as different lines and pattern which I think will look well projected on the performer’s body and it moves and changes to the beat of the song.

AMBER - Projection finalised

Here is the footage that we projected onto my face while filming our projection idea on Friday. After researching into footage we could use, I finally realised that there is something that I see all the time that we could use.
This is a feature on iTunes were you can press cmd and T whilst you are playing the song and these pretty colourful firework-like patterns appear on the screen that move in time with the music. I was mesmerized from the moment I saw it so I personally thought it would be great to use this to project onto me. As the lights move in time with the music, this means it will look more effective and will flowy nicely!

AMBER - Feedback from Wider Target Audience member

Name: Loryn Goldston

Age: 40

Gender: Female

I decided to ask Loryn a few questions about how she thinks our project is going so far. I showed her the footage that we've filmed so she was able to give me detailed feedback about how she thinks it's going and where she thinks we should go with the footage now.

I felt it was important to ask her where she thinks we should go next because edits are a very important part of a music video and as she is the perfect example of a member from the Wider Target Audience, all her feedback will be taken into great consideration while editing.

Loryn had varying different ideas from what Natalie said, however they are both pleased with the footage that we have and they both feel it reflects the word Wonder and that I took into consideration what they said in pervious interviews.

AMBER - Artist Image

As a group, we decided that the image that we are trying to give off for our artist Athena is a positive one and we want people to respect her and her music. Therefore this is shown by the use of her wearing respectable clothes; clothes that are current and stylish, however that also cover her up so she is not portrayed in a provocative way. This will connect with our Wider Target Audience as they said that they would like to see the artist dressed classy and with these outfits this is what is bring portrayed

AMBER - FILMING Review by Amber - Day 3 (Projections)

FILMING - Day 3

During our 3rd day of filming we took so clips of us in action on the flip cam. Here we see Amber performing as we are filming the projection idea in Room 333 of the Media Department in college. We also see our organisational skills as we prepare where what to do and where Amber should stand ect. We work well together as a group and were really pleased with how the projection idea turned out. The sparkly colours and moving lights really fit into our theme and will be used through out our music video.

Editing:

After the filming session, we started editing the footage. We laid down the projection base tracks onto Final Cut Pro and begin to lip synch. We also had a chat with Rebecca and she gave us some feedback on how she thinks it's going and what we need to do to improve in the next stages of editing.

EDITING - Day 2

Today, after filming the projections, we began to edit some more as a group. We lip synched the projections and layed them done as Base Tracks too. This was a good try out of lip synching the actual singing because it was the first time that we actually lip synched this properly and it turned out well. Here are some pictures of the editing process:

AMBER - FILMING - Performer's Extra Footage - Clips

Here we see some clips of myself organising and arranging what the performers in this section of the video should do. Anil couldn't seem to grasp the concept of passing the note on in time with the music which we all found really funny! Eventually, after many takes he got it right though, but we all got ear ache after hearing him complaining that his trousers were getting muddy! :P

Myself filming:

AMBER - FILMING - Performer's Extra Footage - Vlogs

Here I am explaining the filming I did today. I didn't feel that only 3 days worth of footage was enough for our group to succeed because this else this meant we wouldn't have enough base tracks of clips to get us through the editing process.
I didn't premeditate filming today, however I was out filming with Group 15 and it was a lovely day; and due to the circumstances of my group's batteries running out, I decided to take the opportunity of using some of Group 15's battery life as they had plenty left and were willing to help.

Here the performers are getting ready to pass on the note. Rochelle, Anil and Alex where perfect for this section of the music video, as we needed different people to pass on the note. The concept of this is that the note holds the lyric "You are full of Wonder" and it is like they are passing on the message to other people to inspire them to make them happy and feel good about themselves so they believe that they are full of wonder.

Filming With Projection Tryout

After filming at Peregrine's Pianos today, went we to film at Room 333 where we planned to film our projections idea; however a few problems occurred.
When we did a quick test, we noticed that the projection did not come out well on black clothing. Therefore we think that the colours will come out better if shone onto white clothing as we saw in Rihanna's You Da One video.
So we decided it would be best not to film today as the footage was not great and could not be used in our edits. However on a positive note, we have planned to film using the projection again on Friday and this time we have learnt from our mistakes and will bring white clothing.

Here are videos we have filmed using the flip cam to show our decision making and a quick tryout.
