Pitch - Question 6

What would a big fan of music videos from the genre of music heard in 'Wonder' expect to find in music videos?

Today I visited HMV at Westfield (Stratford City).

While I was there I looked around at the CD shelves and looked for the artist that produced Wonder. I wasn’t able to find any CD’s by Naughty Boy but I was able to find Emeli Sande’s album ‘Our Version of Events’ in the R&B / Hip Hop section, which is her genre of music.

However after doing research the genre of Wonder falls into R&B and Soul

I also looked at other artists that were in the R&B section and Soul section so I could find out different artists which are do similar music to the genre of Wonder.

So this can give us more of an idea of what people would expect of location, performance and style in the music videos of this genre of music.

Then I spoke to a member of staff in HMV and luckily he was a fan of Soul but not much of a fan of R&B but he knew what people would expect in the music videos of the genre.

He said that R&B fans would expect heavy dancing and the singer singing at the camera a lot with branded clothing and make - up and probably having friends appear in the video.

He said the Soul fans would expect not a lot of dancing but swift movements from the singer as well as the singers being calm and relaxed in front of the camera.

I decided to play the song Wonder to him as he had not heard it before. He was able to identify the 2 genres of the song but also added indie as a genre because he said the song of the song would appeal to people who like indie music.

Then I asked him what would he expect to be in the music video of this song and he said “he would expect the video to be safe and in the middle so no extreme crazy things – not out there, it would be happening and that Emeli Sande would appear in the video acting emotional as it is her style and that it would have dancing that would reflect something”

Moving on, when I got home I search the internet for fan sites dedicated to Naughty Boy & Emeli Sande but couldn't find any for Naughty Boy and Emeli Sande's fan sites were not very active of helpful.

So I decided to go on YouTube and look at songs that are from the same genre and looked at the comments that people have written about the song genre and video

 

So based on this people have given positive comments about the song after watching the video , so the video must be good because people would of complained in to comments.

So if we show the same level of performance with out going over the top and having a similar style it will work well because this is what fans and used to seeing in Emeli Sande music genre which they now expect to see.
