Music Industry In 2012

In this blog I will be discussing about the music industry in 2012. It will be about record labels, where the music industry is heading, audiences and why music videos and the music industry is important.

There are 3 record labels that dominate the music industry and they are Universal Music Group,   Sony Music Entertainment & Warner Music Group – the ‘Big 3’.
In the past the major labels that dominated the music industry started off as the ‘Big 6’, they were EMI, CBS, BMG, PolyGram, WEA and MCA. Then Sony bought CBS Recording in 1987 and it changed to Sony Music and in 1998 PolyGram merged into Universal Music Group which were formerly MCA making the ‘Big 6’ the ‘Big 5’. The in the ‘Big 5’ became the ‘Big 4’ which were Universal Music Group, Sony (BMG Music Entertainment), EMI Group & Warner Music Group. This has now become the ‘Big 3’ after EMI Group was sold earlier this year.
The companies that own the 3 big labels are conglomerate companies that specialise in more the one thing and they are Universal Studios, Sony and Time Warner.

The music industry is heading down because as technology has developed it has become easy for people to download music illegally and free on different media platforms e.g. phones on different formats e.g. mp3 resulting to the music industries not making as much money as they use to in the past. Even with sites such as itunes (apple) which allows legal downloading illegal downloads is more common. But now artists are being offered 360 deal which allows them to make money not just from selling their music but from things like their concerts and shows.

The role music videos play in the 21st century is to help encourage people to help buy the song / album (music) so money can be made. It also means there are more chances of the song being played for example on TV music channels MTV, 4Music … and YouTube.

Audiences are targeted in music videos thought the way the performers in the video is dressed and is acting in the video as well as the setting the music video is filmed in so the audience can relate to the music video.

Music videos are important to the music industry because with people being able to consume music illegally and free they need ways to make audiences to relate to the artist or song making them want to by the music so money is made.
