THE WEAKNESSES OF OUR BRITNEY SPEAR'S REMAKE.
After carefully analysing our 'Hit Me Baby one More
Time' music video remake, I have noticed some technically weaknesses here. For
example, we did not film enough base tracks. A base track is where the
performer sings the whole song from one place and the camera stays there and
films the whole thing. When we watch existing music videos there are a number
of different shots we see but we always go back to seeing shots from the same
angle and perspective. Therefore it is needed for the performer to be filmed singing
the whole song many times from different angles in order to be able to use
different shots to make it more interesting for the viewer. This is why when
professionals make music videos they can film anywhere between 5 - 30 different
base tracks because there needs to be many different shots on the screen for
the viewers aesthetic pleasure.
During our production of this remake video, we only
filmed one main base track of Jayne in the corridor which was a disadvantage to
us because when it came to editing we always had to flick back to the same
track of Jayne in the corridor at the same angle and same distance which became
quite boring. We could have made it more interesting by using different angles
and distances away from her. I have learnt that it is important to be
adventurous with the camera work and to film lots of different base tracks from
different angles so when it comes to the editing we have lots of different
exciting images to use on screen.
During the filming of the video remake, I have noticed
that some of the camera work is a bit shaky, which was a disadvantage to us
because it feels amateur and slightly ruins the viewing. We decided against
using a tripod because it is important not to become reliant on them and in
professional videos they barely ever use tripods and there should be lots of
moving camera work. Therefore I feel that accurate camera work is an important
technical skill that needs to be highly focused on.
In the postproduction of the video remake, again
because there was not enough footage some of the video seems quite repetitive.
I can see that there needs to be improvement in cutting to the beat of the song
during the editing because some of the cuts don't match up and seem quite
unneeded. For example, at 0.07 seconds we see an image of a blonde girl appear
on screen that lasts for less than half a second that was not necessary to be
there and that cut was too fast so it did not fit with the beat so it looked
wrong.
These weaknesses leave us with room for improvement and
now I will take on board all the things that could be better so during the
production and postproduction of our actual music video for the A2 coursework,
I will be able to improve my skills and I will know what needs to be done to
make it look better. This remake task was very important and I am grateful that
I took part in it because it was a valuable experience to learn key skills of
music video production as this is very different to the skills that I leant
last year with the film production.
